Displays of Library Materials Policy

The library’s philosophy of open access to information and ideas extends to displays of library materials within the library or on its digital platforms. The library provides displays to highlight the library’s collection and inform the public. In creating displays, the library strives to present a variety of opinions and viewpoints. Inclusion of material in a display does not imply endorsement of its content. Displays will not exclude topics, books, resources or other material because of the origin, background, or views of the creators or because of possible controversy.

Displays are implemented by Adult Services and Youth Services staff. Library staff may work with community partners or other organizations and individuals when planning display topics; however, displays are not planned for commercial or profit-making purposes, solicitation of business, fundraising, or to display partisan materials which promote current political candidates, campaigns, parties, or issues. As a public institution committed to diversity and inclusiveness, displays are planned to be inclusive of customers of all religions and of no religion.

Library staff consider the following as they make decisions about display topics, materials, and accompanying resources:

  • Does the display further our mission to strengthen our diverse community and transform lives by bringing together people, information, and ideas?
  • Does the display meet community needs or interests?
  • Is there recreational, historical, civic, cultural, or educational significance?
  • Does the display connect with library programs or community-wide events?
  • Is appropriate display space available?

The library welcomes feedback by speaking directly with a library staff member or via our website.
