Application & Hiring FAQs

Everyone interested in employment with the Shaker Heights Public Library must complete an application for a position via our Career Portal. Resumes are welcome, but cannot be used as a substitute for the application form. A resume alone is not sufficient for consideration.

Q: How can I be sure that a position I find online has not already been filled?

A: Positions are posted for at least one week; positions that have been filled are removed from the site.

Q: What is the minimum age requirement for working at the library?

A: You must be at least 16 years old to work at the library.

Q: What are all the steps involved with applying for a job?

  1. Submit an application and resume via our Career Portal. If you are applying for a library aide position you do not need to submit a resume. If you need an ADA reasonable accommodation to submit your application, please email HR@shakerlibrary.org for assistance.
  2. If selected for an interview, you will be contacted via email, text, or phone.
  3. If offered a position, the offer is contingent upon passing a background check and verified references.

Q: Can I call or email Human Resources to verify my application and resume were received?

A: You will be sent verification that your application has been received through our Career Portal. We are not able to respond to individual questions about receipt of applications. No phone calls, please.

Q: What is the interview process like at the Library?

A: The hiring manager will review the applicants for an open position and the most qualified candidates will be contacted to come in for an interview. Interviews are behavior-based and questions will be asked based on position for which applied. If a candidate is selected, we complete a background check and check references. Learn more here.

Q: How should I prepare for an interview?

A: Visit the Main library and the Bertram Woods Branch. Explore our website to learn more about the library and the services we offer. Prepare by having examples of your past customer service interactions and outcomes. Be prepared to answer questions regarding past work history and other relevant experience.

Q: What is it like to work at the Library?

A: The library is a fast-paced organization focused on friendly, excellent, proactive customer service at all levels within the organization. If you are innovative, service-oriented and enjoy working in a dynamic, challenging environment, you will be successful at the library.

Q: Can I do my court-ordered community service at the library?

A: Unfortunately, the library is generally unable to accommodate court-ordered community service.

Q: What kind of work can volunteers do for the library?

A: Volunteers will not take the place of paid staff.  Volunteers may work on a regular basis or for special projects or events, depending upon the needs of the library. There may not always be current volunteer opportunities available.

Q: How old do I have to be to volunteer?

A: Volunteers must be at least 12 years old. A criminal background check will be completed for volunteers over 18 years old. If you’re under 18 you must have parental permission.

Q: Can I do my library school practicum or senior project at the library?

We offer opportunities for high school students who need to complete a senior project as well as students pursuing degrees in the library field.

Submit a proposal for your unpaid practicum or senior project to the Deputy Director for review along with any documentation from your school that specifies the expectations of this experience and a copy of your transcript showing the classes you’ve completed thus far.

Please allow four weeks for us to review your application and other documentation. Decisions are made as soon as possible after receiving the application. If you are selected, we will contact you to set up a meeting to work out the details.
